Cool Links for Week of February 9th

Posted by 9 February, 2009

Last week we had hosted the Carnival of Personal Development. I want to thank Jeremy Day at Insight Writer for allowing me the privilege of hosting it. On a different note, I am right about 3 weeks away from my first half marathon. I’ve run in a few 5 K races, but nothing close to a half marathon. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous :). Onto the great posts around the web.

Book Review: Made to Stick – I got about half way through this book before I was bored to tears. I really WANTED to like the book which is all the more reason why I got half way through the book. Mike King’s review, and the fact that this is one of the few books on Trent’s bookshelf, makes me consider giving the book another shot. Have you read Made to Stick? What did you think?

How Bloggers Helped Brewdog Increase Sales Substantially – Derek sheds light on the how powerful an advocate can be for your business. The advocate in this instance was a few beer bloggers that apparently commanded a strong following.

Your Small Business: 3 Ways to Take Advantage of Being Small – Steve presents a great outlook how being a small business, actually has it’s advantages. I like the 3 advantages he provides: provide personal service, ability to bend the rules, and take advantage of your agility. I would also add that as a small business, you might actually be able to take more chances since you have less to lose if this is a side business.

Get More Blog Visitors: Blog Blazers Share Their Secrets – Jeff put together a great post for any aspiring bloggers out there. I know there are a few tips I will start following!

10 Minute Budget by Erica Douglass – Erica has finally convinced me to get a budget going. It’s been on the “List” for quite sometime and really needs attention. We follow our money closely, but we don’t have a budget per se.

55 Green Budget Tips to Show Nature You Love Her – Nathalie presents a lot of great tips for those interested in being “green”. The resource that seemed most useful to me was It allows you to stop junk mail (the only mail we receive).

Economic Prognostications 2009 – Jeremy provides a few resources to questions out there right now such as: will the stock market recover, will the housing market recover. While I don’t put a whole lot of stock into the more extreme views, I think it’s important to read different views and then form conclusions on your own.

10 Tools for Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolutions by Kevin Purdy – A lot of people make new year resolutions. An overwhelming majority don’t stick to their goals. Here are some tools that you can use to accomplish your goals. Good luck! What are you doing to ensure you stick to your goals?

Five “Healthy Snacks” That Aren’t Healthy by Adam Pash – Looking at the picture, I really didn’t want to read the article because I knew it was about food that I ate and thought was healthy. Do you eat these foods?

Repair, Restore, Rejoice: Making the Most of Home Appliances by Betsy Teutsch – About to buy a new appliance, perhaps you should look at this article first.

Free Audiobook – Seven Habits of Highly Effective People – I can’t believe I haven’t read this book. If you are like me and haven’t read it yet, maybe you should download the audio book.

6 Ways Your Credit Score Changes Thursday – It good to see these guidelines in place. While I don’t think it’ll affect me on a personal basis, it’s nice to see that people who have a single blemish being less penalized. On the flip side, is this going to give people more of an incentive to walk away from their homes if they can’t make the payments?

2 Simple Paths to Unhappiness – This is a great post that shows happiness is within and not due to plastic surgery or a new Xbox. I digress. I have to admit that I’m awfully tempted to get an Xbox, but I am holding restraint mainly because I’m worried I’ll be on it too much.

Get a Load of CRAPTM in 2009 – A part from the clever acronym, Tim Clark provides a powerful message for those of you that want to actually complete some of your goals for 2009. DO FIRST WHAT YOU WANT TO DO LEAST.

Hey Glenn!

Thanks for the comment. I may have to pass on your words of wisdom onto my wife. I’ll be sure and say that Glenn said I should get an Xbox. 🙂

Hey there! 😀 Thanks for sharing the links – I’ve already seen a few that I’m going to check out after this. Unfortunately, I missed the previous carnival so did not get to submit my article. By the way, what’s your name and how should I address you? I was looking at your About page but you did not mention it 🙂
